What to visit.

This visit is performed by a neonatologist. The naked baby is laid down on a changing table by examining every part of the body from the head to the lower limbs carefully, then we move on to measuring the weight and reactivity to stimuli which include:

• The head: observing the structure and symmetry of the face, the auricles, the diameter of the pupils and the mouth, indicating the possible presence of swelling, due to the compression of the head during labor, or spots;

• The thorax: the exploration of the thorax includes, in particular, auscultation of the heart and lungs;

The genitals: in the boy, the pediatrician verifies that the testicles have descended into the scrotum (the thin skin sac that contains them), while in the girls he verifies that the labia minora are separated;

The limbs: on the one hand, muscle tone and reflexes are assessed, which represent an important indicator of the state of well-being of the newborn, on the other hand, the conditions of development are measured. In particular, to exclude incomplete maturation of the hips, the Ortolani maneuver is performed, useful for the early recognition of any dysplasia (a congenital defect, i.e. present from birth, of the coxofemoral joint, i.e. the point of intersection of the head of the femur, the long bone of the leg, in the cavity of the pelvis bone that contains it).
