Breastfeeding in the summer: tips.
With the arrival of summer, the temperatures increase, but the baby's requests are always the same, and sometimes it is really annoying and complicated to breastfeed during the hottest hours. So to continue enjoying this special and intimate moment with our little one without suffering from heat and excessive sweating.
Sweating while breastfeeding, what to do?
1. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. And sip even if you don't have an immediate feeling of thirst because when it comes it means that you are already dehydrated and endangering your milk production. Before feeding, prepare a bottle of water or fruit juice to keep close at hand so that you don't have to get up to drink while you have the baby attached to the breast. Remember that it is extremely important to drink at least two liters of water a day in hot weather, and especially if you are breastfeeding because water is essential for milk production.
2. If you are on vacation, take the opportunity to breastfeed in different places than usual and rediscover the usefulness and naturalness of breastfeeding outdoors: for example, you can experience the sensation of giving milk to your baby in a mountain meadow or on the seashore, the important thing is to find a place full of shade and coolness, away from prying eyes and where you can sit in a comfortable and relaxed position.
3. Particular attention to clothing: both at the time of feeding, but also during the hottest hours of the day, comfortable clothes are to be preferred. Wear lightweight bras, even better if they are breastfeeding bras that open thanks to the double hook, fresh and cotton t-shirts or tops. And for the child, a short-sleeved cotton bodysuit could be the ideal garment, as it performs the function of wiping sweat and avoiding blows of air.
4. Before feeding, try to drink something lukewarm, such as herbal tea. In this way sweating will be favored and the body temperature will be lowered.
5. On warmer days, the baby may want to latch on more often to drink and hydrate. Prefer shorter but frequent feedings. The first milk of each feed is more liquid and allows him to replenish what he lost in the heat and sweat. Remember that in normal cases it is therefore not necessary to supplement breastfeeding with water or other drinks.
6. The position for breastfeeding is also very important, which can sometimes be extremely annoying in the hottest hours. For example, you can try lying on your side on the bed, placing the baby in front of you at the height of the breast. This will limit skin-to-skin contact which could increase the sensation of warmth, without losing sight of your baby.
7. If you are breastfeeding outdoors, choose a shady place, where you can feel comfortable away from strangers and where you can find a comfortable and relaxed position.
8. Do not go out during the hottest hours, and if you really can't do without it, always carry a hat and an umbrella with you to repair the baby.
In any season we find ourselves breastfeeding can be tiring and tiring, both for the mother and for the baby, therefore, especially in summer, it is easy to notice that the baby is very sweaty during sucking and we feel sweaty too.
Remedies.
1. If you have air conditioning, use it as well, but with responsibility and following important rules: the ideal temperature at which the thermostat should be set should be around 25 degrees and not lower, and the jet does not go directly towards the child or even towards you because it could easily cause colds and sore throats.
2. When breastfeeding at home, find a cool place in the house where you can comfortably settle down every day to attach your baby. One place is not as good as another because in some corners of the house it is cooler, and a room can be more ventilated and less exposed to the sun than others.
3. To keep the night cool even during the day, close the windows as soon as the sun rises and ventilate the room for a long time in the late evening.
4. Drink at least two liters of water and rehydrating herbal teas, wear fresh clothes made of natural fibers and take frequent showers with lukewarm water.
5. Change your baby's position often because skin-to-skin contact causes you to sweat even more.
